My Caterpillar!

The other day I found a green caterpillar on some bricks in the backyard.

Daddy and I looked up on the computer what kind of butterfly it would be and we found out it would be a Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly.

I put it in my butterfly cage with Poplar leaves, which was what the internet said they ate. I put in cottonballs full of water in there for him to drink.

We don't know if it is a boy or girl.

The caterpillar did not eat. He just climbed around and then sat on a stick.

My mom wouldn't let me take it to school, so I am going to blog about it instead.

Yesterday the caterpillar turned a dark color brown. I thought it might be dead.

But today it looks different. And it wiggles when I blow on it. It is a pupa! A butterfly pupa is called a chrysalis.

This is what it looks like today:

It is supposed to stay a pupa until spring. Then it will come out as a butterfly.

When it comes out I will set it free.

We will see if it is a boy or girl when it comes out, because girls have blue spots on the hind wing.

It is going to be fun setting it free! Because we're going to hold it and lift it into the air.

  1. That's wonderful Nicky! Keep us posted. Ms.Emily

  2. I enjoyed reading your post Nicholas. Thank you for sharing about your pupa. I can't wait to see a picture of it when it turns into a beautiful butterfly.

I miss you and love you a whole bunch!
